It is incredibly difficult to put into words the importance and impact a mother has on those around her;
October 27, 1953, Bobby Elaine was born to Shirley and Robert Smith Sr. in West Carthage, New York. The oldest of 10 children, Bobby learned very quickly how to care for those around her and she carried that trait with her throughout her life.
On November 20, 1970, at the age of 17, she met Thomas F. Martin Sr. and knew she had met the man she would spend the rest of her life with. After one week of courtship, on November 27, 1970, they were married in an intimate ceremony that would span a lifetime of “in good times and bad, in sickness and health, till death do us part.”
Bobby always knew she wanted a big family so her and Tom began that journey soon after marriage in Canandaigua, NY.
Born on February 23, 1973, Bobby and Tom welcomed their first child, Thomas (Tommy) Jr. Tommy was an incredibly happy and active little boy and the light in Bobby’s eyes. Soon after on January 23, 1974, they welcomed a baby girl, Teresa Elaine. To love and be loved, Bobby was accomplishing exactly what she wanted from life with her young family. Bobby cared for Tommy, Teresa, and their home while Tom worked.
Facing financial adversity, Bobby decided to do what she did best, care for others. So, she began an in-home daycare where she became a second mother and caregiver to several neighborhood children through much of her life. It gave her such joy to contribute to her own family while helping contribute to other families.
It would be a few years but longing to grow her own family, on September 14, 1977, they welcomed another boy, Kirk Lee. Kirk was a rambunctious one with a lot of energy and Bobby certainly kept busy with the three little ones.
Knowing she had more to give, they decided to have another child and on February 14, 1979, they welcomed Melissa Marie (Missy). Born with a life-threatening illness, Missy would be the last child in the Martin family as Bobby’s focus would be to care for her during her illness.
Days, months, and years would go by and while she never had more children of her own, she was blessed with the babies of her children; Parker, Chelsea, Thomas III, Evan, Johnna, Keegan, Brianna, Landon, Kiara, Ayden, Savannah, Arianna, Trevor, and Jayce. They brought her such joy and comfort when she needed it most. She felt so blessed to be able to help care for them whenever she was able.
In addition to caring for so many, Bobby found a way to give more through working at the Norte Dame Retreat House for 10 years where she retired.
Despite the trials and tribulations of life’s challenges, of financial burdens, of a son gone too soon, of a child stricken with illness, of mental health disorders…and the list goes on; Bobby had a joyful presence and a bubbly personality. She lit up a room with her larger-than-life smile and even bigger sense of humor.
Bobby shared an amazing life with Tom reaching a nearly 41-year milestone of love, laughter, and tears until his death on October 9, 2011. Until his final day, she cared for him and loved him with all she had.
After years of caring for others and putting her own health to the side, Bobby fell ill. Bed ridden as the result of multiple strokes, she needed others to care for her.
Her daughter Melissa took the lead in ensuring she was well taken care of. Traveling quite a distance every day while dealing with her own health issues, she was committed to ensuring her mom had what she needed.
When Melissa was not available, Bobby’s sister Fawn and Melody as well as Laura Simpson (who was like a daughter) were always there to fill in the voids. At a moments notice they were there to help in any way they could. For that, we are forever grateful.
Bobby’s life would seem too short to many, but those of us who were blessed to be touched by her, understand that her life and the imprint she left on our hearts exceed the time she was on this earth.
We love you mom…no more suffering…
Teresa
