Obituary of Claire Anne Hauenstein
One of God’s children, Claire Hauenstein of Canandaigua, NY passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the age of 83 years. Her funeral mass will be at St. Mary’s Church, 95 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424, Wednesday, August 7th at 11:00 a.m.
Claire was born on August 12, 1940, to the late Franz and Beryl Tillinghast Wiedman. She grew up in the Rome NY area where she attended school at the Academy of the Holy Names. At age 21, Claire moved to the Rochester area and began work at Xerox in a clerical position. Her grit enabled her to attend night school and earn a master degree in business administration from the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business Administration with a focus on finance and economics. In the 80’s, Claire advanced to Vice President of Procurement stationed in the U.S., UK, and The Netherlands.
Claire was married to the late Sidney L. Hauenstein for 29 years. Upon their retirement in the mid-90’s they traveled extensively in their motor home in the U.S. and Canada for 10 years. They moved to Florida in 1999. Claire returned north to Canandaigua NY in 2015. She was a resident of Ferris Hills at Westlake in Canandaigua, a senior community.
Claire was a member of Our Lady of Light Catholic Community in Ft. Myers, FL. She served as a vice-president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul there. She was also a member of St. Mary’s Church, Canandaigua NY.
She was founding president of Friends of South County Regional Library, Inc., in Estero FL.
A breast cancer survivor, she was founding president of Lymphedema Resources, Inc., a nonprofit organization and a longtime volunteer with Susan G. Komen Southwest Florida. She was a board member of Partners for Breast Cancer Care, Inc., Fort Myers.
Claire wrote grants for charitable entities within the Rochester area such as Family Promise. This charity helps homeless families in the Finger Lakes Region.
Claire is survived by her brother-in-law, David Hauenstein of Ft. Myers FL; step-daughter Gail (Timothy) Gemmell, Poughkeepsie NY; stepsons, Kenneth Hauenstein, Seneca Falls, NY; James (Lois) Hauenstein, Williamson, NY; Karl (Margaret) Hauenstein, Canandaigua, NY; granddaughter, Sarah Gemmell; grandsons, Gregory (Emily) Hauenstein, Major Timothy (Elouise) Hauenstein, Mark Hauenstein, Alec Gemmell, Robert (Emily) Henning, Christopher (Gabe) Henning; great-grandchildren Noelle, Gavin and Layla Henning, Eloise Hauenstein and Arthur Hauenstein.
