Obituary of Roy J. Macumber

Roy Jonathan Macumber June 23, 1955 — April 16, 2024 On Tuesday, April 16, following a brief but aggressive battle with cancer, Roy Macumber died peacefully in the arms of his beloved wife, both of them lifted up by the love of the family they created together. Strong and steady in body, mind and faith throughout his life, Roy was known for having a no-holds-barred commitment to his marriage, family, friendships, career, and most importantly, to his God. As the understated but undeniable spiritual leader of his family, he put his faith into action, praying and reading the Bible daily with his wife, Kris. Together they prayed for people they loved, who they hoped would renew their relationship with God or would begin a new one. Through the years, Roy had shared his faith with many and hoped his unwavering belief through his sickness would help them see the power of Christ. If relationships with God would be renewed or begun, he said, his illness “would all be worth it.” He served his church by leading and participating in youth ministry, car ministry, music ministry, and technical arts. And beyond the walls of church, Roy invested generously in people, relationships and causes with his time and resources, and always with his signature humor and dry wit. Roy loved his work as senior mechanical/software engineer at HAN-TEK, Inc., and the colleagues he collaborated with. Retirement had little appeal, he recently said, because his job continued to be so fulfilling. Known by many as “a man who can fix everything that is broken,” Roy’s diverse skills made him both a specialist and utility player. He could repair or rebuild engines of all kinds — cars, boats, motorcycles, mopeds, chainsaws and lawnmowers — and could handily tackle plumbing, electrical, and carpentry jobs. Roy also enjoyed building furniture and cabinets and general woodworking, and was as comfortable re-roofing his house as he was programming robots and designing machines that would handle materials for manufacturing. Earlier in their marriage, Roy and Kris teamed up to write and direct multiple musicals for their church’s teen performance ensemble, Trial by Fire. Together they toured the northeast with a whole production team, performing in churches and other venues. Undistracted by superficial, unimportant things, Roy was always intrigued by remarkable beauty and clever engineering, wherever he found it. He spent many happy hours restoring his beloved classic 1977 Nova, and the family’s 36-foot Catalina Chris Craft 1978 cruiser. Roy and Kris would often retreat to “their happy place” aboard “True Blue” on Seneca Lake and enjoy afternoons and overnights on the water, just the two of them, or surrounded by children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Roy will forever be celebrated and treasured by his wife of 39 years, Kristine; his children, Adam (Hannah) Macumber, Samantha (Taylor) Apicella, and daughter, Danielle Macumber; and grandchildren Wyatt, Silas, Rylinn and Arwen. Also giving thanks for his life and legacy are Roy’s sister, Bobbi Smith; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Melody Burri, Lisa (Scot) Bennett, and Greg (Melanie) Morey; and mother-in-law Anne Morey. Roy is predeceased by his newborn daughter, Brianna, father and mother, Edwin and Jane Macumber, his father-in-law, Charles Morey, and brother-in-law, Paul Burri.
