It is with great sorrow to learn of Steve's passing. I had the privilege of working with Steve as he battled his condition with dignity and strength. Steve had every reason in the world to be resentful, but he did not let his failing health stop him from being kind to others and grateful for what he had. I only knew Steve for a short period time but even in his most trying days his resilience and faith will forever leave an impact on me. Steve suffered with dignity and maintained his pride. He was a truly inspiring person. I am grateful for the time I got to spend with him and his family. May God have mercy on his soul and grant him eternal rest.

Dear Alexis and family, I am sadly taken aback about Steve’s passing as I haven’t checked in on Caring Bridge for awhile. You have surpassed labors of love for Steve long ago. I have a little story about Steve my Veterinarian. I had a miniature American Eskimo named Camille-Louise (Cami-Lou). She was quirky and ever devoted to each other. I was unhappy about the care she was getting and changed to Dr. Steve. His gift of compassion and veterinarian skill made him priceless to pets and their pet parents. Cami-Lou developed cancer in her sinus. Dr Steve was amazing giving me information and comfort when the decision is inevitable we must make at times with our pets. His kindness with both she and I is unforgettable. God bless Dr Steve and his family.

He was a wonderful man and vet! He helped us validate our decision to send our beloved Miles over the rainbow bridge during COVID and luckily it was a time we could be outside together. His empathy and compassion was so important to us. Our sympathies to his family and friends.

Two photos taken in the same spot in Geneva NY 29 years apart. Steve's friendship, loyalty, and spirit was why this group was so close. We will miss him, his stories, his humor, and his leadership.

Deeply saddened by this loss. Steve was truly one of the great ones. I have very fond memories of us playing sports and sharing many good times and laughs during our younger years at Yough. It is apparent he has influenced everybody he has encountered along the way and the people of upstate New York have gotten the pleasure to know Steve as well. The list goes on and on of the qualities this man had and he is one to look up to and emulate. It is without a doubt, Steve is doing God's work now. Rest in peace Steve. Thoughts and prayers go out to Alexis, Paige, Maddox, Heidi, and Nola; Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Christine, Kirk, and all of the rest of the family.
Our Deepest Sympathy,
Jeff Sofran and Family

Dr. Steve was a fantastic veterinarian and all around great man. His calm, friendly manner put his patients and their humans at ease no matter the issue. He was also an accomplished craftsman having done much of the woodwork in the Smiths beautiful home. To Steve’s family, please accept our condolences on his passing.

Steve was one of the first people I met when I showed up for football camp at Hobart in 1994. We lived in the same dorm that year and remained friendly throughout our time at Hobart. He was always a man who knew his way, his goals, and his values. I have always deeply respected him. His passing is a tribute loss for this world.

Rest in peace, Steve, you surely deserve some peace after your valiant three year standoff with brain cancer. I believe his resolve, faith and family helped to extend his life beyond expectation. This man, this awesome human being, this incredible veterinarian, cared for 8 of the 9 fur babies who owned us for over 13 years. I could not have handled all the serious health issues lobbed at my crew without his support, knowledge, humor and compassion.
I have never met anyone like him.
Steve was also an important player in my development of the Canandaigua Canine Campus dog park. He spoke and wrote to the City Council about the value for a dog park here, advocated for the membership model, attended our fundraisers, made a generous donation to the effort from Canandaigua Vet Hospital and was a consultant to the Friends of CCC Dog Park Advisory Group.
I am heartbroken for his extraordinary wife Alexis, 4 children and pets, family, colleagues, friends and his patients and their humans.
As Steve whispered to our first Newf Dukie as he helped our boy over the bridge: “You are a treasure.”
All my love,
Nancy McCarthy and family

Steve was the best vet we ever had! Our lab boys loved him. We would bring all 5 at once and he seemed to love it. We became friends and would talk about our love for IPA. We would bring him growlers. Sneak them in to him.
We so miss him. We will always cherish those memories with him. I hope he finds our lab boys and plays with them.
