Tom had many friends. While growing up in Pittsford you could find Tom down the street with his friend Mike. Mike was like a brother to him especially since Tom was the only boy in a family of 5 girls. Burt also a great friend shared many good times with Tom. A special thank you to Burt who was there for him when Tom was battling cancer.
Tom was strong willed and very independent. He was always very active and had many interests.
He was a fishing enthusiast, enjoyed boating, hiking, cross country skiing and biking. He also liked going to music festivals, county fairs and tractor pulls.
Tom loved his cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, lawn tractors, 4 wheelers..you name it Tom had it. He was a collector of anything with a motor. He was an extremely creative and talented mechanic.
The 1959 Chrysler Saratoga that Tom drove from Alabama was his pride and joy and was hoping he could restore it someday.
Tom was a "Ford" man.. NO CHEVY'S!!! He had one truck he referred to as the "Beast". Not much to look at but cleared his driveway in no time flat. Tom had property in West Sparta and had his large collection of trucks and cars on display in his yard!
Tom also loved his motorcycles, Triumphs Yamahas, and especially Goldwing motorcycles (don’t even mention Harley Davidsons).
Tom started racing go karts at 50 yrs old. Tom was a fierce competitor and won several plaques and trophy's. While his fellow racers would be taking a lunch break Tom would continue to study and tweek his cart to make it a little faster. He liked the idea of being frugal and showing you don't have to spend a lot of money on fancy equipment to win races. While his cart might not have been the newest or the fanciest Tom's excellent driving skills in combination with his cart allowed him to win many races.
Tom loved his pets. “Foxy” was his german shepard. Foxy was a loyal friend and even rode his motorcycle with him. Tom was forever heartbroken over the loss of Foxy. Tom also had several cats that he adored. His cat Buddy liked to go for rides in his truck. One winter day after a chemo therapy appointment Tom came home to find 2 small kittens crawling out from underneath his trailer. They became great companions and good therapy for Tom.
As a child Tom enjoyed climbing trees. That love of climbing carried over into adulthood as he became a self taught cable construction lineman. Tom took pride in his work and was always searching for a more efficient way to get the job done and done well. Tom worked as a lineman down south and along the eastern seaboard.
Tom is survived by his sisters Rita, Kathy, Mary, Janet and Susie and kitties "Lucy" and "Rosie" Predeceased by his parents Amelia and Thomas Olsen.
Please join us in a celebration of Tom's life August 21st 2022 1pm Hopkins Point lodge Mendon Ponds Park.
