Obituary of Alice A. Rivers

Alice Rivers 1932 - 2019

Her high school yearbook said of her: “with a friendly smile for everyone, she has her friends and she has fun.” Well into her senior years, Alice believed that description still held true when she described herself as a “happy go lucky person with many friends.”

Alice Weaver Rivers was born on February 24, 1932 in Carthage, New York to a dairy farmer and his wife, John and Fanny Weaver. Shortly after high school she met Floyd (Riv) Rivers, who would become her loving husband on February 18, 1950. They had their first son, Donnie, in 1951, followed by a daughter, Julie (Lantaff), in 1953, a son, Richard, in 1955, a son, Mark in 1956 and a daughter, Pam (Duvall), in 1961. They have sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Riv and Alice moved to Canandaigua where Riv opened his barber shop in 1955 via Felts Mills, Pulaski, Seneca Falls and Waterloo. Their lives were focused on one another, their children and home life. Alice enjoyed activities with Riv and together they were active in the Kiwanis Club and its annual Minstrel Show and in the YMCA. They loved music and western swing dancing.

Alice worked for many years at the Canandaigua Medical Center as an Insurance Administrator. She retired from the Medical Center in 2004 and spent her retirement years doing the things she enjoyed most - spending time with her children and grandchildren and doting on her husband. Alice never missed the high school graduation of any of her grandchildren whether local in Canadaigua or in Los Angeles. An early adopter of technology, grandkids bragged about their grandmother texting way before others did as she expanded her computer skills to stay in touch.

A loving Mother and conscientious homemaker, Alice created warm memories of family and home for her children and grandchildren. Simply put she was a “Great Mom and Gram”. The outdoors was not her thing instead homemade meatballs, pizza, cookies, fresh corn on the cob, fried cheerios, paprika chicken were favorites she would prepare and keep on hand. Her pride in her home, her husband and her family showed throughout. Warmly accepting, Alice often referred to her “go with the flow” personality and “different strokes for different folks” philosophy. She lived those sayings.

Alice’s dream of traveling never materialized as she cared for Riv as he aged then she was struck by illness herself. Nevertheless, Alice kept her sense of humor, her warmth, and caring sweetness. She quickly became popular with her cohorts at Fox Run the assisted living home where she ultimately lived, cheering up others with a laugh, quick pun, tease, or cricket click sound.

Always glad to see you, Alice was a good listener, kind and patient. She lived a life she was proud of, unified her family and created long, loving memories.

The family would appreciate in lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimers Assocation.
