Obituary of William R. Myers
William (Bill) R. Myers (5/2/1930-2/15/2018)
Bill R. Myers was born in Rochester, N.Y. in the spring of 1930. Growing up in Rochester, Bill dreamed of traveling the world. By the time he was twenty-one years old, Bill had traveled the world twice with the Merchant Marines and also had an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army by the end of the 1940's. In his younger years Bill took on a wide array of interesting occupations. Bill worked for the California Highway Patrol and also as an entrepreneur, owning an Antique shop in Vine Valley, NY. Antiquing and attending garage sales would remain Bills favorite pastime throughout his life. Bill specialized in rare flasks, furniture, and cars of the past, including his prized 1927 Star that still sits at his home. Bill would later take on a career at the V.A. Hospital as an aide in the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit where he would remain for thirty-four years until his retirement in 1986.
In 1990 Bill would marry the love of his life, Ruth Meiswinkel, who he would remain with for the rest of his years. Bill and Ruth met in 1974 in Middlesex, N.Y. where they lived across the street from one another. Bill met Ruth when her two youngest daughters saw him unpacking and went to ask if they could help. He did not need their help but he did need and cup for his coffee because his mugs were all in boxes. The girls walked him across the street to their house and the rest is history.
Bill's passion for travel continued, this time sharing his adventures with Ruth. The couple traveled through Europe, vacationing in such places as England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, and Belgium. He would remain an avid antiquer, loving husband, and storyteller throughout the rest of his life.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Myers, and her children Mary Jane Myer, Terry Myer, Lillian Salsman, Susan and her husband Donald Newkirk, Lorraine and her husband Steve Winters, Rhonda Amon, and Charlotte Zoeckler and her husband Dennis. Also, Ruth's Brother Bruce Meiswinkel and his wife Anne. Bill has dozens of step-grandchildren. Bill was also survived by his children William Jr. and Marylou.
Bill will be joined in heaven by his step-son John (Jack) Squires who he was close with, and also his step-sons-in-laws Frank Salsman, Donald (Butch) Myer, and step-grandson Jeremy Salsman.
