Michael was a kind man. He has made a huge impact on my fiancé Jessica Sich and our two daughters. Constantly helping us with everything he could and brightening our lives each and every time we saw him. He visited us once a week and we had the privilege of him taking us in last summer for a few months. Loved him like a father, as he quickly filled the void of an active father. A beautiful loving life he shared with us. Forever we will miss you Big Mike. Rest easy.

I loved Mike like a brother since we were 16, and we have kept up with each other by talking on the phone every month or two. To this day, I have never had a better friend, or a more kindred spirit. Despite the physical distance between us, our phone calls were like the continuation of a conversation that began when we were kids, and that continued as though we were in daily contact. I think about Mike every day, and I laugh in my heart when I do. We literally came of age in one another’s company. We learned many lessons together, usually the hard way. We shared both the joys and the pains in our lives, and Mike certainly experienced much more of the latter than I did. Yet, Mike had a way of always making me feel cared for, as though everything would be ok, no matter what happened. That’s how he lived his life, and his influence was uplifting even when Mike was in the throes of depression. My enduring regret will be not making time to visit Mike after he moved to New York.
Flo, Liz, Joanne, Mike, Susan, and Donald, please accept my warmest and most sincere condolences. I know Mike has been a troubled soul since his motorcycle accident 28 years ago. Somehow, Mike always found a way to persevere, and to find elements of life to live for. He always spoke of you all when we talked on the phone. Mike and Joanne, I’ve heard about your kids and your joys and tribulations as parents over the years as I shared with Mike my own, similar stories. I’ve heard about Susan and Donald’s life in southern Delaware and the property you have owned and nurtured there. Mike and I talked about the places we used to fish in that area as landmarks. And, I know that Mike kept Flo with an ample supply of firewood at all times, just like he did when he lived in the basement of the Newark house. Mike loved his family, and he loved to talk about you and to let me know that you were all well.
I will miss Mike Gilkey. He is part of my soul and I will continue to celebrate him in my heart every day.
