Emily Josephine Mattice Spencer
Emily Josephine Spencer, born July 11, 1916, was a teacher, pilot, Head Start Director, Peace Corps member, Girl Scout leader, world traveler, writer, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She taught school in Canandaigua until her retirement in 1974 and then joined the Peace Corp in Malaysia from 1974 to1976. Josephine was Director of Canandaiguas first Head Start Program, sponsor and guide at the Sonnenberg Gardens and Museum, lifetime member of the Ontario Historical Society, volunteer at the Canandaigua VAMC, as well as at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
Josephine served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a member of the Civil Air Patrol from 1959-60, belonged to the Travelers Club of Canandaigua in 1976, visited every continent, except Antarctica, and was an active participant in an intellectual exchange with China of teachers and doctors.
The world is a better place for her time here, and we are blessed to have shared so much of this time with her.
She is survived by sons Terrence (Mary), and Timothy (Joanne); three grandchildren, Lori Ketcham (David), Curt Spencer (Anna), and Christopher Spencer; two great-grandchildren, Spencer and Miles Ketcham.
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Rev. Harold Spencer in 1985 and by her brother Theodore, her father, Lloyd Byron Mattice, and mother, Grace Iredere Jurden Mattice.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Josephines name to The American Cancer Society, 1400 Winton Rd N, Rochester, NY 14609 and The Hospeace House, 7824 W Hollow Road, Naples, NY, 14512.
Friends may call Tuesday, January 25th from 5-7 pm at the Fuller Funeral Home, 190 Buffalo Street, Canandaigua, NY. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
