Obituary of Floyd Rivers

LOVED BY MANY Floyd “RIV” Norris Rivers 1927-2014 Riv passed peacefully in the early morning of August 12, 2014 at his home. Riv was part of the social fiber of the Canandaigua community for over 60 years. He and his wife Alice raised their own 5 children plus Riv was loved as a secondary father to many others. He counseled many youth at the YMCA, during slow afternoons at the barber shop, and on his school bus. He will be missed by many. Riv went to school in Herring, NY and joined the US NAVY in 1944. He was on the USS REPOSE Hospital Ship when he was ordered by a Commanding Officer to be the barber, and has been a barber ever since. After discharge from the Navy he barbered and met his beautiful wife Alice in Carthage, NY. They married in 1950, and eventually settled in Canandaigua. Riv’s Barber Shop opened in 1960 on South Main St. where it flourished until he retired in 2012 at the age of 85. Before going to work as a barber, Riv enjoyed driving school bus every morning, for the children of the community. After cutting hair all day, and then eating dinner with his family, he would head out to the YMCA to work the front desk. Many people will remember his famous Riv’s Pizza, and his presence supervising roller skating parties and sleepovers. During the winter months, Riv would also supervise the ice skaters at the old Red Jacket public skating rink which was located near the boat launch on South Main St. In 1992 Mayor Polimeni proclaimed Riv as Mr. Canandaigua due to his faithful service to the Canandaigua community. Riv is survived by his loving wife Alice, three sons, two daughters, 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and three siblings. Friends may call Thursday, August 14, from 2-4 and 5-7 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home, Inc. 190 Buffalo St. Canandaigua. A 10 a.m. funeral service will be held Friday, August 15, at the funeral home.
