Howard,
Executive summary:
Thank you for being a mentor and such an unconditional, good friend all these years to me and our family.
Remembrances:
I remember starting out at Rochester products as a student, with my first assignments in the early 1900's era die casting department (Swedish sweat shop) and general plating department - then being assigned to Howard's Service Department. It was like first dying and then going to heaven. Howard was in his element and having way too much fun! He later had to make up for it as Production Control Director where the "control" part had to be the epitome of the term oxymoron. When we lived in Michigan and Ohio a call about our intention of coming to Egypt Valley mysteriously prompted a significant veering of the township plow off of lower Egypt Road leaving an extended parking space in front of the cabin. When we headed down the drive we smelled wood smoke and when we opened the door there was the Bristol "old boys club" welcoming committee with insides as toasty as the warmed cabin. Howard, Bob Bird, and who ever else was hanging around the garage at the time made arrival a real home coming. And so did the awesome meals at your place overlooking Bristol valley.
When the "Bent Barrel" and "Bent Pin" hunting and fishing club for "old codgers" helped populate Bristol with pheasants we hunted high - Pete's farm (where you can see the city from the fields) , Gladding's farm's (where roosters grew the size of turkeys), and the lowlands by Honeoye Creek. We took a rabbit or two as well and had some great game dinners on "Top of the Hill" garnished with Howard's Vidallia onions, carrots, brussel sprouts and salt potatoes from the garden he lured his deer in with as well, Other nights after the hunt, with Charlie's help, we started the owners of the Valley Inn on their way out of business when they made the mistake of offering full bowls of all-you-can-eat-shrimp. Big mistake!
With the advantage of snooping around GM's product world Howard had a line on every desirable vehicle for red necks GM was working on. The rest of us would wait and wait to eventually see that he wasn't just making up stuff like the Blazer and the Corvair pickup truck up. Building drag machines with Eddie Miller in Rush, testing our work on the roads between Rush and Honeoye and never letting Bill Morsheimer even get a good look at our bumpers, we didn't expect to get surprised by Howard's factory (limited) purchases. But when riding with him to feed the cattle over at the farm one snowy night I remember a sharp right turn half way to Gladdings corners - shooting out over a huge snowbank, plunging down through the field below, plowing snow all the way with the firm expectation of walking back to the top, and then watching Howard's grin as that damned Corvair clawed its way right back up the hill, over the bank, landing with thump back on the road. Try that with your Volt!
In the last decade or so when Michigan has had more of a hold on us, we'd catch a few days and dinners with Howard and Rollie in the Adirondacks, in Bristol, and the town formerly known as Holcomb. If someone from Hollywood had been looking in they never would have made the film "Grumpy Old Men" with professional actors - they would have given Howard and Rollie top billing and second careers for at least three sequels.
Howard, Thank you for you! We wish you clear sailing and all the fresh air you can take in in your renewed state. Your friendship and spirit will not diminish back here in our hearts.

Howard was a true gentleman and I shall miss his wisdom and insight. There are a precious few men of Howard's caliber left that will keep us focused and honest. My sympathies to his family, you have much to be proud of in what Howard left us.

Rest in peace my dear friend. I will miss our conversations and 'dates' to republican functions. The last few years have been difficult for you and although sad, I am relieved that you are at peace. You will always be remembered with great admiration. My deepest sympathy to your family and many, many friends. Thank you for your many years of friendship. Your in God's hands now. Love Kris
