For Aunt Ruth
Your face was fine and statuesque, your gait well-poised wtih grace;
dressed to the nines, a true knock-out, in silks, cashmere and lace!
Your children sparkled impeccably from hair to polished shoes.
You followed Nana Kate's diligence in cleanliness and kindness too!
The mean gossips in Brooklyn worked very hard to get innocent Katie mad.
With deogatory slurs to say Irish moms kept their children sloppily clad!
Little did the gossiping crew know that Kate Carroll and her Manico girls
would fight fire with fire and annoy them with beauty and tightly coiffed curls!
You sang sweetly and swore that you were the best singer of the Manico crew!
Although your sisters had their own opinion; not one would challenge you!
It would be futile to grapple with your insistence on being the very best.
You'd win most debates with your fiery soul and sharp words filled with zest!
You were loved and adored by co-workers and patients at Thompson Hospital.
With your jovial laugh and funny jokes, you'd cheer up the impossible!
So proud of your beautiful MaryAnn and Cath, if there was an audience near,
Ruth was on hand with entertainment for all, yelling, "Girls, come do your cheers!"
If you got pissed off, you often yelled loudly, even Cindy ran for the hills!
Why couldn't everyone just follow the rules and stop challenging Ruthie's will?
But, your bark was always worse than your bite and you didn't mean to yell.
An apologetic pot of your spaghetti and meatballs always served everyone well!
But, you soft side would win our hearts on a dime; nurturing with tender care.
Treating me like a perfect princess, showing me off proudly everywhere!
You nursed my fever in Westbury when everyone else was asleep,
staying up all night long without a complaint, I thank you for being so sweet!
Your faith never faltered and I know that in Heaven, God will right every wrong.
You'll reunite with Uncle Ray and your family and dance to Angel's songs!
As I stand here today, I can see the family you raised and they're amazing by far.
MaryAnn, Cathy, Don and their children are truly shining stars!
We'll miss you Aunt Ruth, my mom is now solo in that old favorite "Ragged But Right"
The last Manico to keep the world on its toes and continue the justice fight.
But, I feel comforted knowing you're there with God making him hear your voice
to send miracles to your family in need, He'll listen -- He has no choice!
With so much love,
Dawn

Dear Aunt Ruthie, I don't think I could ever see a jar of Pond's cold cream or smell L'Origon perfume without thinking of you. You will always be in my heart and hope you're dancing the peabody with Uncle Ray in heaven.
